What's happening at FUMC

Dear Friends,
Yesterday during worship we celebrated the baptism of Trip Wallace, the son of Dorothy and Ricky Wallace, and the grandson of Lewis and Dorinda Lynn.  Thank you for agreeing to nurture Tripp in the Christian faith, so that hopefully one day he will confess his faith in Jesus!

Nancy Model also mentioned during our Minute for Ministry yesterday that the Florida Department of Transportation is asking for comments from the public on the proposals to lessen congestion along Highway 90.  Even though the DOT has recommended Proposal 1, which proposes to widen Highway 90, there was some opposition to this proposal by members of the public last week.  If Proposal 1 is rejected, then the only remaining Proposal is Proposal 4, which would change the character of Monroe Street (the street behind our educational building) by allowing commercial trucks and vehicles to travel on a proposal three-lane highway that would call for the relocation of the residents north of Monroe Street.

Some of the talking points that Nancy, who worked in the public transportation arena for the County for many years, has suggested to include in a letter to the DOT are: 1) added noise and vibrations from commercial traffic in a quiet, residential district where generations have lived, worshiped and gathered for more than 150 years, 2) safety concerns arising from the proximity of logging trucks, dump trucks, and other commercial vehicles to the church’s playground, 3) increased risk of accidents because of vehicles backing out of the parsonage, which is perpendicular to Monroe Street, and 4)  increased vehicle emissions where people live and worship.  Feel free to include any of the above or your own ideas.   We have been told that the FDOT actually does read and weigh heavily the comments from the public in deciding these issues!  If you wish to comment, then please send your letter to the attention of Peggy Kelley by either:

Please welcome our new Youth Director!  Angela Buchanan is no stranger to our church.  She sings in the choir and her son Donovan is active in our children’s programs.  Angela is a middle school teacher who loves working with youth, especially middle schoolers!  Please make her feel welcome!

Our Youth will be traveling to Andalusia, Alabama, to hunt fossils on May 6.  If you would like for your son or daughter (ages 6th through 12th grades) to participate, please complete a permission slip, which is available from Andrea Sutrick or the church office.

Thank you for responding to the request for meals for the homeless through our support of Family Promise.  Our Family Promise week is April 30 - May 5.

UMCOR Packing Party!  Our packing party to assemble the UMCOR kits will be held on May 20, immediately after the 11:00 a.m. worship service.  We will meet in Fellowship Hall.  If everyone pitches in, the assembly should not take long!

If you have sewn bags for the UMCOR kits, kindly bring them to the church office by the end of April, so we can see how many we will need to fill.

Graduation Sunday is May 20.  If you have a graduate in your family who will be in church that day to be recognized, please call the church office so we can plan accordingly.

Our Flower Calendar is available for you to select your date to honor or remember a loved one by placing flowers on the altar.  The regular arrangement costs $35.  If you have special requests or particular flowers for the florist to include, please contact Megan Holt and she will obtain a quote for you.  We do not automatically transfer requests from last year to this year’s calendar, so reserve your date today on the Flower Calendar in Fellowship Hall.

Remember that we will have one service at 10:00 a.m. this Sunday, April 29.  Sunday School will meet at 9:00 a.m.  Be ready to sing to your favorite hymns; requests will be taken from the floor.  Also we will have an old fashioned dinner on the grounds in Fellowship Hall immediately after the service!
